Hostile Terrain 94 is organized by the Undocumented Migration Project (UMP), an internationally known research-education-art collective founded by anthropologist Jason De León in 2009.

The pop-up installation “Hostile Terrain 94” is based on the multi-media exhibition of the same name co-produced by photographer Michael Wells and artist/curator Lucy Cahill.

Personnel Bios

49940007Jason De León is Head Curator of Hostile Terrain 94 and Executive Director of the Undocumented Migration Project, Inc. 501 (C) (3). He is also Professor of Anthropology and Chicana/o Studies at UCLA and author of the award winning book “The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail” (UC Press 2015). De León is a 2017 MacArthur Foundation Fellow and between 2013 and 2017 he co-curated the traveling exhibition “State of Exception.”

Michael Wells is Co-Curator for Hostile Terrain 94 and has served as primary photographer for the Undocumented Migration Project since its inception in 2009. He has photographed the project’s ethnographic and archaeological fieldwork in Arizona, New York, Mexico, and Ecuador. A Los Angeles-based photographer, he has created photography projects on post-Katrina New Orleans, the physicality of the US Mexico border in Arizona and California, and Latino communities in the American South.

Lucy Cahill is Co-Curator of Hostile Terrain 94. She is a Detroit-based visual artist with a background in curation and art history. She is interested in methods of curation that shape the larger conversation about issues in the current political landscape, and bear witness to underrepresented issues and populations. Her personal work uses an illustrative approach to explore ideas of femininity and feminism, power and the body.

 

 

austinAustin Ella Shipman is Programs Manager for the Undocumented Migration Project. She holds her BA in Sociocultural Anthropology and Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Washington and has been involved in the Undocumented Migration Project since 2010 having assisted with field school efforts in both southern Arizona and Mexico. She is particularly interested in the interaction between urban planning and migration and how cities can be better designed for the displaced. She is beyond excited to be re-joining the UMP team in the context of this critical exhibition.

Daniel López is Communications Director of Hostile Terrain 94. He recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in Sociology. He has been involved with the Undocumented Migration Project since 2017. He is particularly interested in researching how DACA recipients going straight into the workforce after their high school graduation make sense of their future. 

 

Nicole Smith is Exhibition Coordinator. She holds  B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan.

Gabe Canter is Exhibition Coordinator. He holds  B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan.

Aissa Cabrales is Exhibition Liaison for our Midwest Partners. She is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan pursuing a double major in Psychology and Spanish with a minor in Anthropology. She has been involved with the Undocumented Migration Project since 2018 and is interested in researching the effects of deportation on children.

 

 

Maeve Skelly is Exhibition Liaison for our Midwest Partners. She is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan.

Faith Williams is Exhibition Liaison for our Midwest Partners. She is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan.
